STARTING A BLOG: MY TOP TIPS!

I really can’t believe that I’ve been blogging for over two years now! I have learnt a lot since starting my blog and thus, I would like to offer some advice and tips on how to get your blog started out. So here goes…

Picking a name
Obviously this is one of the first things you will have to do, and it is really hard if I’m honest. I wanted something that was going to be quirky and unique, but I couldn’t think of anything so I just chose my name – easy peasy! Remember you will be telling your blog name to loads of people in the future so make sure it’s something that others remember. After creating my domain name I went ahead and also made Twitter and Instagram pages too.  

Picking a website to use
WordPress is the easiest blogging platform and has loads of quirky and professional looking layouts available. I started over on Blogspot but got so confused with how it worked I came over to WordPress and never looked back! When you pick your theme for your blog, look for something that suits you. I chose my theme/layout as it was very minimalistic and I knew people would be able to scan and read it easily if the design was simple. That’s another big step too, make sure the font is readable for your audience!

Be professional
You might have just created your blog as a hobby but sooner or later you may have brands and PR agencies wanting to collab with you. If that is the case, make sure your blog looks professional from the start. You hate a certain lipstick from a certain brand? That’s fine, give your honest opinions but don’t go around slating the brand so much to try and make everyone against them. You have to realise that you will gain a readership that will listen to your opinions, so instead of slating a brand, why not create a pros and cons list of why it didn’t work for you?

Build an audience
I found the easiest way for me to gain an audience was being in touch with other bloggers. I love chatting and commenting to other bloggers I follow on here and on other social media platforms, and it does help you gain a wider audience. I realised that broadcasting my posts on my Twitter and Instagram gave people a chance to click and read my posts and if they liked what they read- they’d go ahead and give me a follow. Another way of building your audience is by being active on Instagram. Another way I found that people would engage with what your writing is if you mention the brand or company you have wrote about in your social media posts- you never know, they may give you a RT and get more people reading your blog!

Lastly….Have fun with your blog and don’t be too disheartened if it doesn’t get big straight away! 🙂
